The Anatolian Shepherd

The Anatolian Shepherd is a molossian-type breed which originated in Turkey, where it was used mainly as a guardian of flocks against wolves and bears. Only the fiercest ones actually survived, while the younger ones were fitted with spiked collars to afford them some protection in their work agaisnt predators.

Height: After age 2, the minimum height for males is 29" (74 cm), and for females, 27.5" (70 cm), however the range is generally 28-32" (71-81 cm).

Weight: After age 2, the minimum weight for males is 110 lbs (50 kg), and for females, 88 lbs (40 kg), however many are in the range of 140 lbs (63 kg).

Coat Type: The double coat can be short and dense to medium long. Minimum grooming is required.

Temperament: The Anatolian Shepherd has a steady and bold temperament, and may show strong aggression when it feels it is warranted and it is challenged. Since it originally was bred as a guard dog, it should be introduced to strangers, and it should be socialized and trained early.

Special Interest: The Anatolian Shepherd has been clocked at great speeds: over 35 mph (57 km/hour).
