The Bull Terrier
The Bull Terrier was originally used to bait bulls in the 1800's in Great Britain. The Bully, as it is affectionately known, originates from crosses between the Bulldog and the Old English Terrier. Since the bull-baiting sport is no longer allowed, a more tractable dog was developed, though retaining some of the best attributes of the original dog; present day dogs are great companions. They are a compact yet powerful dog; they should be well-muscled and athletic.
Height: 21 - 22" (53.3 - 55.9cm)
Weight: 52 - 62 lbs (23.2 - 27.7 kg)
Coat Type: The coat is short and smooth and requires only minimal grooming.
Temperament: The Bull Terrier is a very intelligent dog that is also fearless and determined. As with other "determined" terriers, training must start early, and be consistent and firm.
Health Problems: In cold climates, care must be taken not to let them stay out for any length of time, as they get frost bite quickly. In hotter climates, with their short coat and pink skin, Bullies tend to sunburn and so need to have sunscreen protection applied when outdoors.
Special Interest: Contrary to popular belief, Bullies get along well with other dogs and animals, as long as the puppy is socialized very early with a variety of animals, emphasizing gentleness during play.
