Catalan Sheepdog
The Catalan Sheepdog originates from the Catalan area in the northeastern parts of Spain, around the Pyrenean mountains. It does resemble the mountain dogs of the Pyrenean area such as the Pyrenean Shepherd, and is thought to have developed from dogs brought over from France. It dates back 200-300 years and was originally used as a herding dog and herd guardian, working well with the herds and horses, in the rough and rocky terrain. It is an attractive dog with beard and a mustache, and a very expressive face.

Coat Type: There are two coat lengths: the long-haired variety which is the more common one; and the short-haired variety, called the Gos d'Atura Catala, which is extremely rare and is close to extinction. The hair on the long-haired variety is somewhat wavy and shaggy, varying in color from pale fawn to gray-black.
Temperament: The Catalan Sheepdog is of exceptional intelligence, being easily trained to work with other animals, in police work, or just being a fine family companion; it will be a good guard dog though as it is often wary of strangers. This agile working dog will require exercise and activity.
Health Problems: Some lines are prone to hip dysplasia.
Special Interest: The Catalan Sheepdog was used as a messenger and guard dog during the Spanish Civil War.
