Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is an ancient dog that many believe to have originated in Africa. From there, it made its way to China, became the pet of the Mandarin, then found its way to Europe and South America. Originally called the Chinese Emperor when first registered in the UK, it was re-introduced as the Chinese Crested Dog in the 1960's; at this time, only the hairless variety was accepted. It wasn't until 1984 that the coated variety (the Powder Puff ) was recognized by the Kennel Club. The breed was granted recognition by the AKC in 1992. The Chinese Crested Dog is a very elegant dog which moves with grace; the hairless variety is often compared to a prancing horse, while the Powder Puff is sometimes called the Afghan of the Toy Group.

Height: 13" (33cm) for dogs, 12" (30.5cm) for bitches

Weight: 5 - 12 lbs (2.2 - 5.4 kg)

Coat Type: The Chinese Crested Dog comes in two varieties: the hairless and the coated Powder Puff. The hairless dog has a smooth silky skin, which may be plain or spotted, but with silky tufts of hair on its head, tips of paws and tail. The skin may require body oil or moisturizer. The Powder Puff has a full silky coat which is a long, soft undercoat that hangs down on both sides of the dog. It requires regular brushing to avoid mats and to retain its smooth flowing appearance.

Temperament: The Chinese Crested Dog is agile, alert, busy and affectionate, making it a delightful companion.

Health Problems: Caution is required for the hairless variety in extreme cold or heat, and it is prone to sunburn. Some of the hairless variety may be born with some missing teeth or claws.

Special Interest: These dogs are generally odorless.
