Chinese Foo Dog

The Chinese Foo Dog (fu is the Chinese word for happiness), also known as the Happiness Dog as well as the Celestial Dog, originated in China with its name deriving from the city of Foochow. It traces its ancestry back over 3000 years with its progenitors including the Spitz Foo Dog and several other Asian breeds. It was originally used as a hunter, a working dog, and as a family protector. This dog comes in 3 sizes, the standard, the miniature, and the toy.

Height: Standard: over 15" (38 cm), with females being smaller Miniature: over 10" (25.5 cm) and up to and including 15" (38 cm) Toy: 10" (25.5 cm) or less

Weight: Approximately 35-50 lbs (16-23 kg) for the Standard

Coat Type: The coat is always very thick, but comes in two lengths: one referred to as the short plush Teddy bear length, and the other as the longer Ruff length. This latter length coat is often clipped (but not if the dog is to be shown). Both coats, especially when at natural length, require regular grooming.

Temperament: The Chinese Foo Dog is a wonderful dignified companion who is quiet; it recognizes family friends but is reserved with strangers. It loves to be with children. It is a very trainable dog.

Health Problems: The Chinese Foo Dog is generally very healthy.

Special Interest: The Chinese Foo Dog is said to be the link between the wolf in China and some of the early Asian breeds.
