Chinook

The Chinook (chinook is the Inuit word for warm winter winds) was developed in the USA in the early 1900's as a sled dog. It traces its ancestry to the northern Husky-type dogs, the Belgian Shepherd and the smooth St Bernard, thus resulting in a strong, yet endurance type puller with good speed. Today, the Chinook is a very rare breed, with only about 300 specimens. Therefore there is a greater degree of inbreeding in this breed than in most breeds, so it is critical to have extensive knowledge of the pedigree extending back several generations.

Height: 23 - 27" (58.4 - 68.6cm)

Weight: 50 - 95 lbs (22.3 - 42.4 kg)

Coat Type: The thick double coat of medium length will require normal brushing, but more frequently during the shedding periods.

Temperament: The Chinook is a people dog, is non-aggressive, and is a patient dog, especially with children. This calm dog is enthusiastic; he is intelligent and can be trained to many tasks, yet often is determined and even stubborn. It must be noted that this dog does not thrive if left isolated and can suffer from separation anxiety.

Health Problems: Generally very healthy, but because of their size, make sure they are screened for hip dysplasia. Some may also suffer from seizures, hypothyroidism, and hyperactivity.

Special Interest: A team of 16 of these dogs went with Admiral Byrd on his expedition Antarctica in 1927.
