Estrela Mountain Dog

The Estrela Mountain Dog, also known as the Cão da Serra da Estrela, originates in the Estrela region of northern Portugal where their main task was to guard and protect the flocks of sheep and goats. They are believed to be descended from the Roman Mastiffs and so are an ancient breed. It is a large sturdy dog that has great stamina and is agile over rough territory.

Height: The range for males is 25.5-28" (65-72 cm), and for females is 24.5-27" (62-68 cm), with the maximum being up to 1.5" (4 cm) above these heights.

Weight: 88 - 110 lbs (39.3 - 39.3 kg) for dogs, 66 - 88 lbs (29.5 - 29.5 kg) for bitches

Coat Type: There are two coat types: the long coat and the short coat. Both types have a thick undercoat. The outer coat of the long coat is thick and somewhat harsh, not unlike goat hair; it is flat and can be somewhat wavy, and lies close to the body; there is a thicker ruff around the neck and upper chest. The outer coat of the short coat is similar in texture to the long coat but straight and short. The coat will require regular grooming, especially the long-coated variety. A great variety of colors are allowed which include fawn to deep red, brindling of these colors; wolf gray; a black muzzle and the mask are highly desirable. Not acceptable are self-colored black or white.

Temperament: The Estrela Mountain Dog is intelligent and most loyal to its owners. It can, though, be stubborn and generally indifferent to strangers. Because of the Estrela's natural guarding and protective instincts, owners must begin training at a young age and establish early who is in charge.

Health Problems: As with many of the large breeds, its lifespan averages under 9 years. This dog will require a lot of regular exercise.
