Greenland Dog

The Greenland Dog, also known as the Grünlandshund or the Grønlandshund, originated in Greenland and dates back to antiquity; it is thought to originally be descended from wolves. Used primarily as a sled dog and as a guardian, it closely resembles the (Canadian) Eskimo Dog and is considered in some countries to be the same breed, although the Greenland Dog is somewhat slighter in size. This robust dog is well adapted to living and thriving in the coldest and harshest of conditions.

Height: 22 - 25" (55.9 - 63.5cm)

Weight: 66 - 70 lbs (29.5 - 31.2 kg)

Coat Type: The coat is long and thick with a dense undercoat.

Temperament: The Greenland Dog is affectionate and loyal, yet independent; it requires a lot of regular exercise. It is considered by some to be somewhat "less domesticated" than other breeds and is therefore not the ideal pet for urban families.

Health Problems: Very hardy and healthy, preferring to sleep outdoors no matter how cold the climate.

Special Interest: The Greenland Dog is sometimes used as a hunter and it can track seals by the breathing holes they make in the ice.
