Hovawart
The Hovawart originated in Germany in the Middle Ages as an estate guardian. Although it resembles the Flat-Coated Retriever, it is not related and is not used as a gundog. It is an athletic dog that covers difficult terrain well and requires exercise. Over the centuries, the breed all but disappeared. However, it was "re-developed" in the early part of the 1900's by German breeders, in particular Kurt König, and was officially recognized by the German Kennel Club in 1937. It was only introduced to North America in the 1980's.
