Iceland Sheepdog

The Iceland Sheepdog, also known simply as the Icelandic Dog, dates back to the original spitz dogs that came with early Viking settlers to Iceland around 800 A.D. However, the breed practically became extinct due to a distemper epidemic; as well because it passed on parasites to humans (which all dogs can do) it was banned from the capital city of Iceland. Although such problems can be controlled by medication today, the ban still exists! It was only through the dedicated efforts of a few Icelandic and British breeders that the breed able to be "restored" in the 1950s. It was recognized by the FCI in 1959. The Iceland Sheepdog was used for a variety of tasks including watchdog, herding dog of course as its name implies, and as a companion.

Height: 13 - 16" (33 - 33cm) for dogs, 12 - 15" (30.5 - 30.5cm) for bitches

Weight: 25 - 30 lbs (11.2 - 11.2 kg) for dogs, 20 - 25 lbs (8.9 - 8.9 kg) for bitches

Coat Type: The coat is of medium length, and is thick and close to the body; there is also a thick undercoat. The coat come in a variety of colors which include off-white to fawn to chestnut, as well as gray, black with white and solid black. Regular brushing is required to keep this thick coat at its best.

Temperament: The Iceland Sheepdog is an intelligent and lively dog. It is affectionate and can become a very pleasant companion, but must be in contact with its people.

Special Interest: The Iceland Sheepdog loves to eat fish.
