Karelin Bear Dog

The Karelian Bear Dog, also known as the Karjalankarhukoira or the Björnhund, originated in the Karelia province of Finland in the 1600s, and was later introduced to Russia where it was further developed. It was originally bred to hunt very large game and is thus a robust and strong dog. It was recognized by the Finnish Kennel Club in 1935, declined in numbers in the 1960s, and has now become more widespread both in Europe and North America.

Height: 18 - 24" (45.7 - 61cm)

Weight: 44 - 50 lbs (19.6 - 22.3 kg)

Coat Type: The coat is made up of a straight, stiff outer coat, and a soft undercoat. Regular weekly brushing is recommended.

Temperament: The Karelian Bear Dog as a large game hunter can be aggressive, but always very brave, and obedient to its master.

Special Interest: The Karelian Bear Dog is known to send a bear on its way, or attack if the bear stands its ground.
