Lapponian Herder

The Lapponian Herder is an ancient breed from the Lapponian tundra in Scandinavia. It has been used for centuries by the Lapplanders and was necessary for their survival in the harsh climates so far north. In recent centuries they have been used to herd reindeer. They were recognized by FCI in Finland in the 1960’s; however they still have an open pedigree, whereby three judges must evaluate the individual dog as to type and the dog must prove its ability with reindeer before it can be registered. This dog’s herding instincts coupled with its speed and its hardiness make it an invaluable working partner for the Lapplanders who still raise reindeer today.
