Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff, or Mastino Napoletano, is an ancient dog dating to about 100 BC. This imposing breed originated in Italy as a guard, military, and fighting dog. The ancestry may extend back to the Molossus breed of Roman times. In 1946 steps were taken by painter Piero Scanziani to safeguard the breed's future. He established a kennel for the breed and did much to promote its survival.

Weight: 110 - 150 lbs (49.1 - 67 kg)
Coat Type: He has a very smooth coat which requires little grooming.
Temperament: The Neapolitan Mastiff is no longer aggressive by nature; it is generally calm and placid. He is friendly with the people he knows well, but will vigorously defend his home and family. Because of his adult size, he must begin training at an early age.
Health Problems: Watch for eye and leg structure problems.
Special Interest: The Neapolitan Mastiff has a slow ponderous, bear-like gait in common with other Mastiff types.
