Otterhound
The Otterhound is an ancient breed which probably evolved from foxhounds and other hunting dogs around 1000, in France, with Bloodhounds, Griffon Vendeen, and later the Welsh Harrier, in its background. Like its traditional quarry, the otter, the Otterhound has declined in numbers since the last half of the 19th century.
Height: 24 - 27" (61 - 61cm) for dogs, 22 - 25" (55.9 - 55.9cm) for bitches
Weight: 65 - 120 lbs (29 - 53.6 kg)
Coat Type: The coat, with its two distinct layers, is the chief feature of this breed. There is a rough outer coat, which feels hard to the touch, and a much shorter, woolly undercoat, which offers the dog protection when it enters the water in search of otters.
Temperament: The Otterhound is athletic and independent, yet it loves the company of other dogs.
Special Interest: The Otterhound has webbed feet which helps it to swim easily without tiring.
