Owczarek Podhalanski

The Polish Owczarek Podhalanski, also known as Tatra Mountain Sheepdog, originated in southern Poland during 1600's to guard flocks in the mountains; it is closely related to the Hungarian Kuvasz and the Slovakian Kuvac. It is also speculated to be related to the the Italian mountain sheepdog, the Bergamasco. Its duty was, and even is now, to protect the sheep against both wolf and man. It generally works in conjunction with several dogs and herdsmen guarding a flock of over 1000 sheep! Although quite large and heavy, this sheepdog breed is surprisingly quick, and will stay with the flock wherever it goes.
