Poodle (Miniature)
The Miniature Poodle originates from the Standard Poodle and is the same in all respects except for his size. Due to demand for a smaller version of the popular Poodle, a process of miniaturization began in the late 1800s. The in-between size Miniature Poodle was officially recognized in 1910 by the British Kennel Club. He, like his forefathers, loves the water and makes an excellent swimmer and retriever of waterfowl. This variety of Poodle is the most popular and numerous, and because of his size, makes an excellent companion for city-dwellers. A daily walk is all the exercise he needs.
Height: 10 - 15" (25.4 - 38.1cm)
Weight: 15 - 20 lbs (6.7 - 8.9 kg)
Coat Type: The dense coat has a harsh feel and is frizzy or curly; it may even be corded. All solid colors are allowed. Coat requires frequent brushing and clipping about four times a year.
Temperament: The Poodle is friendly, intelligent and easily trained. He makes a loving and well-loved family pet.
Health Problems: Epilepsy is highly suspected to have a genetic component in this breed.
Special Interest: The breed was extremely popular in France, and for awhile, was often referred to as the French Poodle. The French used the Poodles for retrieving duck, and also for searching out truffles. With his strong sense of smell, the Poodle would lead his master to where the delicacies were buried under the earth. Unlike the traditional truffle-finding pigs, the Poodles merely pointed them out, but did not go on to eat them!
