Shiloh Shepherd
The Shiloh Shepherd resembles the German Shepherd, but is a larger dog, and that is its very reason for being. It was developed in the USA in the early 1970's to restore the original more massive German Shepherd type. Shilohs are registered by the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry, Inc.
Height: For males, the minimum is 28"(71 cm), with the ideal being 30" plus (76 cm); for females it is 2" (5 cm) less.
Weight: For males, the minimum 120 lbs (54.5 kg) at 3 years of age, with the ideal being 140-160 lbs (63.5 - 73 kg); and for females, 40 lbs (18 kg) less.
Coat Type: The coat comes in two varieties, smooth and plush. The smooth coat is thick and of medium length, with the outer hairs being harsh to the touch; it requires minimal grooming. The plush coat also of medium length with a dense undercoat; the plush variety has a distinct mane from the neck to the chest, hairs not to exceed 5" (12 cm) in length; this coat type requires regular brushing to keep it clean and tangle free.
Temperament: The Shiloh Shepherd is an intelligent, courageous and self-confident dog that will willingly protect its family, yet it is friendly and a good companion to its friends and family.
Health Problems: Hip dysplasia is not found as frequently in this breed as in some other breeds, but to continue this trend, ensure that all breeding dogs have an OFA or Penn Hip certificate.
Special Interest: Shiloh Shepherds can be shown at American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) shows, as well as at many other rare breed shows.
