Sussex Spaniel
The Sussex Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniels, originating in the county of Sussex, England in the 1700's. Its primary use was that of scenting game and retrieving it. Unlike other spaniels and retrievers, it gives tongue (barks) on the hunt with a bell-like voice. This heavy low-slung dog can work well in dense low wooded areas and difficult terrain, is slower on the trail, but determined in its work. The breed nearly became extinct during WW2, but was preserved by a couple of dedicated breeders; it still remains fairly rare. It was one of the first 10 breeds to be recognized by the AKC.
