Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo for short. There are three varieties: the Standard, the Miniature, and the Toy, the latter is also known as the Mexican Hairless in the United States. The Xoloitzcuintli originated over 3000 years ago, accompanying the Aztec's ancestors from Asia to the North American continent. It was a companion dog, and a bed-warmer. It was kept by ancient Aztec settlements and sometimes used in ritual sacrifices. However, when they disappeared, the dogs dwindled in numbers and survived in remote villages only. Thanks to efforts made by the Mexican Kennel Club in the 1950's, this rare dog has been saved from extinction.
Coat Type: There are two types: hairless and powder-puff. The powder puff requires regular brushing.
Temperament: The Xoloitzcuintli has a calm yet alert nature and a noble stance. They were originally bred as pets and the family home is the best environment for them.
Health Problems: This is not an outdoor dog in cold climates, obviously. As well, in warmer climates, watch out for sunburn!
Special Interest: This breed, in Mexico only, includes another breed, the Perro sin Pelo del Peru. See the Special Feature on this rare breed.
