9 Tips for Traveling with Your Dog
Traveling by car with your dog(s) can be tough sometimes. Some dogs get car sick, some get too excited, some get really nervous. Here are a few tips for traveling with your dog by car:
1. Go on a walk or play games with them before you get in the car. The best way to relax is when you are tired. A good walk will help your dog lay down and stay calm on the trip. It will also help you, besides, you’re just going to be in the car the rest of the day too!
2. Don’t feed your dog several hours before you leave. Some dogs get car sickness just like humans do and add in the excitement of travel, it’s better for you and them to travel on an empty stomach. Do make sure that you make ample stops to give them water though, just enough to stay hydrated though.
3. Bring your dogs favorite toy or blanket. Make the car feel and better yet, smell like home. This will help them relax and not stress out as much about change.
De-Stress Your Traveling Dog Holistically
All-natural remedies to calm your dog while on the road.
Does your dog turn into a whimpering pile of mush whenever you try to take it for a drive? Traveling is daunting when your best friend throws up on the upholstery, then attaches itself to your brake foot. If you approach the problem holistically, however, travel for the two of you can be downright fun. Ask yourself these questions:
Is your dog healthy?
Be sure it has no illnesses affecting its ability to travel. Stress, fearfulness, anxiety and disorientation can be caused or aggravated by a number of health problems, including chemical or hormonal imbalances and food allergies. "Biochemical imbalances, hypothyroidism, etc., can all impact negatively on the animal’s ability to cope with stress," said Suzanne Clothier, a holistic trainer in St. Johnsville, N.Y. "Such problems should be addressed and corrected."
