Our care for our pets doesn’t end if we die before them. In fact, that’s probably the time when they would need the most help.
Maybe now we just assume someone will take care of our dogs and cats if they outlive us, but we really shouldn’t leave it to chance. Friends and relatives may promise today, but when the time comes, they could lack the time, money or interest to give an orphan pet a home.
That’s a frightening possibility. Our pets grow older with us, and what’s true for people is also true for them: the most care is usually needed later in life. Instead, some pets whose people have died are unceremoniously taken to shelters or euthanized.
